The University of the Philippines Diliman Monorail, also known as theAutomated Guideway Transit, will be the first monorail system to be built in the Philippines. Plans for the monorail system was revealed as early as December of 2010. The groundbreaking ceremony was held on July 18, 2011. It is projected to be finished on November 12, 2012.
The monorail system shall cover a single track that is 500 meters in length. The speed of the train is planned to be from 50 to 60 km/h, but an upgrade to 120 km/h is under study. The budget of the Department of Science and Technology for the elevated track and the AGT train is placed at PHP 16 million and PHP 4 million respectively. The projected total cost would be PHP 20-25 million. The train will have two passenger coaches with a seating capacity of 60 per coach.
The pilot monorail project will serve as a test case for future monorail projects, notably the planned Makati-Taguig-Pasay Monorail Alignment which is expected to be operable by 2016 and shall link up main transit systems in Metro Manila; the Philippine National Railways (PNR), the Manila Light Rail Transit System (LRT), and the Manila Metro Rail Transit System (MRT-3).
